Procedure Details

The patient had concerns of decay and aesthetics of her upper right teeth. The enamel on two teeth appeared worn and brown discoloration was noted. During an exam, Dr. Patel found a moderate depth of decay. A plan was presented to the patient for composite, also known as "tooth colored" fillings for the restorations. Dr. Patel removed all decay and placed the composite fillings. Proper adjustments were made to her bite, the teeth were polished and flossing contacts were checked. The patient should maintain good home care and her teeth will be continuously examined at her routine hygiene appointments.

Although dental implants are popular, they are not always suitable for every patient. In order to receive dental implants, there has to be enough bone density and an appropriate amount of room for a surgical post to be placed without touching the sinuses. Sinus lift surgery can be performed to help patients become more suitable to receive a dental implant. At Sangiv I. Patel, D.D.S., PA, we can prepare you for a dental implant with a sinus lift. Insufficient bone height in the upper jaw, poor-quality bone, or sinuses that could be too close to place an implant are reasons why you may require a sinus lift (sinus augmentation surgery). When having a sinus lift, your sinus floor needs to be raised so an implant can be properly placed. Schedule a consultation with experienced dentist Dr. Sangiv I. Patel at his office in Melbourne, FL to learn more about sinus lift surgery and dental implants.

Candidates for a sinus lift are those who have limited room in the upper jaw for a dental implant, or when the sinuses are too large or too close to the bone. At your consultation with Dr. Patel, an x-ray will be needed to measure your jaw and sinuses and determine if repositioning the sinuses with or without a bone graft would be a proper course of action before a dental implant.

A sinus lift is a detailed surgical procedure that is performed in our office by Dr. Patel. If needed, a bone graft will be prepared. An incision will be made in the gum at the back of your mouth. Your tissue will be lifted to reveal the bone. The bone graft, if needed, will be placed before the sinuses are pushed higher and away from the jaw. Finally, the incision within the gumline will be sutured.

After your sinus lift, you could be given a prescription for an antibiotic and pain reliever to help you during your recovery. Dr. Patel will also inform you of how to care for your incisions with instructions before the procedure. You should schedule a follow-up appointment about a week after your sinus lift for suture removal. The bone graft will require several months to heal before a dental implant can be placed.

If you have insurance, we will contact your provider to ascertain your coverage and estimate your out-of-pocket costs. If you don't have dental insurance, Dr. Patel can talk to you about payment methods we accept and give you information on low-interest medical financing.

Having a strong jawbone is essential for the success of an implant. Dental implants need a solid support system in the jaw before they can be installed, and a sinus lift surgery will keep the implant from imposing on your sinuses. We ask you to contact our office in Melbourne, FL to schedule a consultation with Dr. Patel if you have any questions or concerns about your candidacy for the procedure.
